Underground Experimental Experience Edition 1: Ben Wetherbee / Suncook Symphony + Deftly Demolition / Solypsis REVIEW
Hello readers, Welcome to my corner to review anything experimental, weird, primitive, revolutionary, boggling, provoking confusing and more. So without further ado, read the first edition of Underground Experimental Experience.
Ben Wetherbee / Suncook - Atomic Fiddle
If I had to describe Ben Wetherbee’s side of this gem in 3 words I’d go with:
Rhythmic fiddle panic
A subtle and intriguing, uneasy feeling is possessive over my brain throughout this entire one-track recording. Truly, atomic fiddle feels like someone’s entire body, psyche, every organ and muscle has been dedicated to composing a solo horror movie soundtrack for 33 minutes. I adamantly enjoyed every second of it. Within the context of the other Ben Wetherbee material I have heard, he’s proven to be extensively versatile and has shown work in bluegrass, freak folk, square dancing, free improvisation, experimental (didn’t see that one coming), and plenty other subgenres and generic brand. What impressed me the most on this release is that despite having genuinely scary levels of sonic experimentality, his technicality with the fiddle just leaves me dumbfounded. I used to think he shaved off multiple bows to record this until I saw him live and completed this masterpiece with only one bow and no breaks.
Suncook Symphony - Sun Up / Fire in Huntington Gorge
Gazing into the droning abyss. This scene pictures itself in my head when I listen to the anonymous music collective suncook, unless you know them, you don’t know them. In an industry like music I always gauge interest in the unknown and mysterious elements of the musical process so when a local group comes around like this I can’t help but dive down the rabbit hole. This atmospheric piece consists of harp, fiddle, tambura, weissenborn, and much more presented in ambient and drone genres as well as american primitive folk. The stunning delivery of over 10 musicians really is something to appreciate on this album and personally leaves me astounded after each listen knowing the attention to detail. This tape on both sides took tremendous precision yet spontaneity to make.
Solypsis & Deftly Demolition - This Is Droidhop Volume 2
Droidhop is some of the grooviest, grimiest and downright baller material I’ve heard in 2024, a well-done way to a year if I must. Droidhop Volume Two took the easy-going, glossy, peaceful yet rambunctious energy of This is Droidhop Volume One then exemplified it with more frantic rhythms and a general boisterous tone. I understand it’s self explanatory however I can’t help but picture metropolis style androids in a robot-language rap battle when listening to this. It truly is an enthralling album from start to finish. This iteration of the Droidhop series is truly diabolical and dooming as well as all stated above. With the dynamics of Solypsis and Deftly bouncing off of each other effortlessly it feels as if you are listening to sonic warfare with extra and tasteful rhythm and harmonics throughout.
