Random Rare Music Edition 1: Anni Rossi - My Grandmother Was A Church Organist

I love understated, rare, hard to find, “lesser known” and under-appreciated music. It’s like finding a treasure chest in the woods that nobody knows about yet. “Random Rare Music” will be a randomly produced written pieces about albums, artists, songs from anywhere, from any time period, current, “uncurrent" on hiatus and anything I feel needs to be listened to and appreciated more.

I discovered this album on the InterTube and instantly knew I had to start a new series on this page. My Grandmother Was A Church Organist sparks melancholy, poignant emotions for me. According to discography, this album was released in 2007 which isn’t super new but that will be a pattern in this series as I’m a firm believer that good music doesn’t expire. This album is warm, yet longing and the larger-than-life feeling I get from these songs are equally grounded and true to humanity. My Grandmother was a Church Organist encapsulates a great stylistic blend of lo-fi, dark folk, dream pop, chamber music and the beginning of the late 2000’s impeccably well. I don’t know anything about Anni Rossi or the thoughts or events preceding this album, but listening to this album has helped me process my own losses and feels like an homage to lost family, I wish I was cool enough to own the cassette tape.

There’s so much depth to the execution of this album, every sung word, note and recording method feels intentional and specifically dedicated, personal and in place. People use art to channel emotions, convey messages, produce political commentary, to cope, to tell stories, to pay respects, to make money, to make good drug use soundtracks, to sound stupid on purpose, or to sound smart. Regardless of your reason or what reasons went along with this album I highly recommend you check it out here.
